Verse 8 – Puruṣa sūkta

Rishi: Narayana, Chanda: nichrut aarshi anushtup, Devata: Puruṣa

तस्मा॒दश्वा॑ अजायन्त॒ ये के चो॑भ॒याद॑तः ।
गावो॑ ह जज्ञिरे॒ तस्मा॒त्तस्मा॑ज्जा॒ता अ॑जा॒वयः॑ ।।

tasmād aśvā ajāyanta ye ke cobhayādataḥ |
gāvo ha jajñire tasmāt tasmāj jātā ajāvayaḥ ||

tasmāt  – from that, aśvā – horses, ajāyanta – were created, ye – that, ke – numerous, ca – and, ubhaya – both sides, adataḥ – teeth, gāvah – cows, ha – famous, jajñire – were created, tasmāt – from that,  tasmāt – from that, jātāh – were created, ajāh – goats, vayah – sheep

Literal: From that were created horses and numerous with two rows of teeth. The famous cows were created from that, from that were created goats and sheep

Interpretive: From that [sacrifice named sarvahutah, where the supreme puruṣa was the oblation], were created horses and various other animals with two rows of teeth, as well as the revered cow, goats and sheep

Ralph T.H. Griffith Translation: From it were horses born, from it all cattle with two rows of teeth From it were generated kine, from it were goats and sheep produced.

This is mantra 11 in ṛg Veda Puruṣa sūkta
