Puranic tales describe a competition between Ganesha and his brother Kartikeya to ascertain the greatest of the two. For this they decided to compete in a race to see who could circumambulate the earth in the shortest amount of time, and hence be crowned the greatest of the two.

Kartikeya assured of his success mounted his vehicle, the flying peacock and commenced his journey. Doing justice to his thoughts he went around his Parents, Lord Ganesha then informed them regarding the competition and his dilemma and solution. Being pleased with his solution Lord Siva settled the result in favor of Lord Ganesha and announced him victorious and blessed him that he will honoured at the beginning of rituals and ceremonies due to his wisdom and intelligence.
