नाग पांचमी – nāga pāncamī

On this special day of nāga pāncamī, here is a small article on it’s relevance

Nāga pāncamī is the festival of worshipping snakes, which occurs on the fifth day of the bright half in the month of śrāvaṇ.

There are numerous reference within Puranic literature of why Hindu’s celebrate this day. According to the Srimad Bhagatavam, Lord Sri Krsna had conquered Kālia nāga and the Bhavishya Purana states that when individuals perform rituals on this day to the Nāga deity they ensure freedom from danger for their families.

According to legend, the lineage of snakes started from Sage Kashyapa’s* fourth wife named Kadru** of which there are eight main Nāga deities which are worshipped and mentioned across the foray of Hindu texts. They are:

अनन्तं वासुकिं शेषं पद्मनाभं च कम्बलम् |
शंखपालं धार्तराष्ट्रं तक्षकं कालियं तथा ||

anantam vāsukim shesham padmanābham cha kambalam;
shankhapālam dhārtarāshtram takshakam kāliyam tathā

Notes:
*Sage Kashyapa is one of the founding seven seers of the ancient Hindu texts, the Vedas.
**Kadru is puranically recognised as the daughter of Daksha.

It is also interesting to note that Rohini, the wife of Vasudeva and mother of Baladeva is regarded as a partial incarnation of Kadru.

  1. Not all puranas are ancient and not are written by Vyasji (he only wrote 18)
    Bhavishya Purana is a relatively modern purana – less than 700 years. Hence often what it says reflects people’s views, rituals and actions from 700 years ago. It must not be taken as seriously as the more ancient puranas.

  2. jsk Bhagwatji, the bhavishya purana is considered amongst the eighteen main puranas composed by Vyasa (Srimad Bhagavatam 12.7.23-24, Visnu Purana 3.6.21, ) and further declared as rajasic in the padma purana (uttara khaṁḍaṁ 236.18.21 – bhaviṣyaṁvāmanaṁbrahmaṁrājasāninibodhame | sātvikāmotdadāḥ proktārājasāḥ sarvadāśubhāḥ). Although I agree the purana reflects peoples views, rituals and actions, it does deem the purana to be much older than the 700 years as mentioned, I think looking at it historically the Purana is much older than the Bhagavata and hence held in much esteem throughout the Puranic literature. However saying the above, the Bhavishya Purana has notoriously been tampered with considerably by both sampradayic forces in enforcing the ‘coming’ of their respective spiritual saviour and externally by missionaries in promoting their religious views and bewildering ignorant Hindus. Hence I believe the original work composed by Sri Veda Vyasa is not the work we see today, unfortunately! Although saying this I believe we should with all good intention still revere the original work as ancient being wary the work we have now is not probably the same one!
